Hey Tim,
You have many options for recording audio obviously.
1) On board mic: You can get a tiny Senheiser on-board mic. This is okay for reference audio, but I wouldn't make it your final sound unless this is a CU interview in a quiet location.
2) On board recorder: The ZOOM is very popular. It will record 2 channels of Stereo ambient sound, plus allow for 2 more inputs from a boom or lav mic.
3) External recorder and mixer: This is the highest quality option. This is the old – Dual System – audio that is tried and true in the film world. This offers the highest quality amps and D/A converters. The Cantar X, and many other Solid State field recorders are available with this method. They are costly, but you get what you pay for…
