I saw this question on other forums, but didn't see an answer.

Using Colorista with mixed footage from ex-1's (Exdcam Ex 1080 50i) and HPX-500 (dvcpro 1080i and 720p);  should I media manage my entire sequence as ProRes 422 before I begin grading, or is it enough to set my sequence setting compressor to ProRes 422 and render everything out as ProRes once I'm done?

Hey Joe,

I tend to convert everything I do in FCP that involves long GOP codecs (HDV, Canon5D, EX…) to ProRes on Log and Transfer.

It just seems to make everything go smoother (rendering, editorial, etc….)

Hey Jenni,

While I agree with you in most situations, it seems like there is not much editorial left, that Joe is at the Color Correction stage, so all the downside and render lag, and general system is already dealt with.

I would say that at this stage, go ahead and Color Correct, and render in ProRes. Make sure that you render into ProRes HQ (10 bit) to avoid any banding issues. The amount of extra storage you will need to create a media managed version in ProRes would not be worth it at this stage of the game…
